Fun Facts
Things you may not know about the franchise
The original film was initially planned as a comedy with talking dragons — it was completely reimagined during production.
Toothless's design was inspired by a black cat, a salamander, and a manta ray, explaining his fluid and graceful movements.
John Powell's score for the first film was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Original Score in 2011.
The trilogy earned over $1.6 billion at the global box office, one of DreamWorks Animation's most successful franchises.
Jay Baruchel, voice of Hiccup, is the only original cast member to appear in all three animated films plus the TV series.
Hiccup loses his left leg in the first film — director Dean DeBlois said this was deliberate so he truly pays a price for victory.
The name 'Toothless' refers to the dragon retracting his teeth — he can extend them when needed.
The Hidden World was inspired by bioluminescent caves and underground oceans that actually exist in nature.
The 2025 live action film used completely CGI dragons — director DeBlois refused to use animatronics or puppets.
Gerard Butler, voice of Stoick in the animated films, is the only actor to reprise his role in the 2025 live action film.
